Coco Martin candidly shared how he once “cursed” ABS-CBN after the network rejected him for projects due to his background as a “bold star.” The Batang Quiapo actor reflected on his challenging journey from indie films to mainstream television in an interview with actor and showbiz reporter Ogie Diaz.

Repeated Rejections

“Before I was given a break, I faced all kinds of insults,” Martin said. He revealed being rejected twice by ABS-CBN because of his association with sexy films, including his debut project, Brillante Mendoza’s Masahista.

Martin recounted instances when he was offered roles but later turned down upon learning of his indie film background. One such role was part of a love triangle with Shaina Magdayao and Rayver Cruz. Despite initially accepting the role, the offer was withdrawn.

He faced a similar rejection after being cast as Judy Ann Santos’ gay friend in another project. Casting agents allegedly remarked, “We didn’t know Coco Martin was a sexy actor, and ABS-CBN has an image to maintain.”

Pain and Frustration

These experiences left Martin deeply hurt. “I was so mad. They made me feel so small,” he said. “I cursed ABS-CBN at the time because it was painful. I respected my work so much, but they looked down on me.”

Breaking Through

Despite his frustrations, Martin eventually got his big break. Encouraged by the late Jaclyn Jose, he auditioned for ABS-CBN’s Ligaw na Bulaklak. With the help of director Andoy Ranay, he was finally cast, marking the start of his rise to stardom.

Martin’s journey underscores the struggles of indie actors transitioning into mainstream media and the resilience required to overcome industry biases.
