DAVAO CITY – Malacañang has backed the postponement of the partial opening of Segment B (Tulip Drive to Roxas Avenue) of the Davao City Coastal Bypass Road, emphasizing President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to prioritize public safety over rushed deadlines. The decision, announced on December 16, 2025, follows sharp criticism from acting Davao City Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte, who called the original December 15-16 target “premature” due to incomplete safety features like streetlights, traffic signs, and full lane completion.
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) confirmed the delay in a travel advisory, stating additional assessments are underway to ensure protection for motorists. “This temporary measure ensures all safety protocols are met,” DPWH said, apologizing for inconveniences while promising updates on a new opening date.
Palace officials defended the move as aligning with Marcos’ earlier inspection of the related Bucana Bridge (December 4, 2025), where he announced a December 15 opening to ease holiday traffic. However, local inspections revealed only two of four lanes nearing completion, prompting the reversal.
Mayor Duterte had warned of risks like accidents in low-visibility areas, accusing DPWH of “stupidity” if lives were endangered. DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon responded by balancing convenience with safety, noting coordination with the local government.
The full coastal bypass—aimed at slashing travel times and decongesting downtown Davao—remains targeted for phased completion by 2027.
For Dabawenyos enduring holiday traffic, the delay underscores a key principle: Better late and safe than rushed and regretful.
