In a surprising shake-up just before the NBA playoffs, the Denver Nuggets have parted ways with head coach Michael Malone and announced they will not be renewing general manager Calvin Booth’s contract.
David Adelman will take over coaching duties for the rest of the season.
Malone, who led the Nuggets to their first-ever NBA title in 2023, leaves as the winningest coach in franchise history. Over 10 seasons, the 53-year-old racked up a 471-327 record, including a 47-32 run this year.
“This wasn’t an easy decision,” said Josh Kroenke, vice chairman of Kroenke Sports and Entertainment. “But it’s about giving our team the best shot at competing for another championship right now.”
Despite Malone’s contributions to Denver’s rise to title contention, the team’s recent slump—losing four straight and seven of their last 10—pushed the front office to act. The Nuggets are currently clinging to fourth place in the Western Conference, with just a half-game lead over four teams and three regular season games remaining.
Kroenke also expressed gratitude to Booth, who helped assemble the 2023 championship roster. Elevated to GM in 2020, Booth is stepping down effective immediately after eight years with the organization.
“Calvin’s knowledge, scouting instincts, and NBA experience helped lift the Nuggets to historic success,” Kroenke said. “His place in Nuggets history is cemented.”
Malone had previously coached the Sacramento Kings, compiling a 39-67 record over two seasons before joining Denver.
