In an electrifying performance, Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks soared to new heights, amassing a record-breaking 73 points – the season’s highest in the NBA – to lead his team to a thrilling 148-143 victory over the Atlanta Hawks. This remarkable feat by Doncic not only halted the Mavericks’ three-game slide but also etched his name alongside the legends, tying him for the fourth-highest point total in NBA history, a record shared with luminaries like Wilt Chamberlain and David Thompson.

With precision and flair, Doncic demonstrated his prowess by sinking 25 of 33 shots, including 8 three-pointers, and excelling at the free-throw line by making 15 out of 16 attempts. His all-around game was on full display as he also grabbed 10 rebounds and dished out seven assists. This monumental scoring outburst marked only the second time this season and the fifteenth in league history that a player has crossed the 70-point threshold, a feat recently achieved by Joel Embiid of the Philadelphia 76ers.

Doncic’s performance was not just record-breaking but also historic, setting a new benchmark for points scored against the Hawks, surpassing the previous record held by Wilt Chamberlain. The Mavericks’ guard was unstoppable right from the start, setting a new franchise record for points in a half with 41 and continuing his scoring spree into the latter stages of the game.

Despite the absence of Kyrie Irving, the Mavericks found support from Josh Green, who contributed 21 points. On the opposing side, the Hawks, led by Trae Young’s 30 points and 11 assists, showed resilience. Young, recently back from a concussion, was joined by Jalen Johnson, Bogdan Bogdanovic, and Dejounte Murray in contributing significantly to the score. However, the team’s efforts fell short, marking their fourth consecutive loss and a less-than-stellar home record.

The game was a roller-coaster, with the Mavericks initially leading, only for the Hawks, fueled by Johnson’s early scoring, to snatch the lead by the end of the first quarter. The lead seesawed, but it was Doncic’s relentless scoring that ultimately made the difference, ensuring a Mavericks’ lead heading into the final quarter.
