Jimin and Jung Kook, the final members of the globally renowned K-pop group BTS, are set to begin their mandatory military service in South Korea. This follows after the earlier enlistment of their fellow band members, including Jin who joined the military last year, and J-Hope and SUGA who enlisted earlier this year. RM and V have also recently begun their service. The group’s decision to fulfill their military duties comes after much debate regarding a possible exemption, given their significant contribution to South Korea’s cultural influence and economy. BTS, known for their global fan base and significant impact on the music industry, has reassured fans of their return with all members renewing their contracts with their agency, HYBE.

South Korea mandates all able-bodied men to serve in the military for at least 18 months. While some individuals, like Olympic medalists and classical musicians, receive exemptions, K-pop artists do not qualify under the current program. The enlistment of BTS members highlights the complexities and challenges faced by male K-pop stars in balancing their careers and mandatory military service. Despite these challenges, BTS’s global influence continues to grow, and the group’s decision to serve is seen as a commitment to their national duties.
