Elon Musk envisions Tesla’s humanoid robot, Optimus, as not just a functional assistant but also a friendly companion. Speaking at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, Musk expressed his desire for people to view Optimus as a friend, comparing it to beloved pop culture robots like R2-D2. He also humorously mentioned the goal of making Optimus “good-looking.”
Musk highlighted Optimus’s capabilities, including walking dogs, babysitting, cooking, and playing the piano, positioning it as a versatile household assistant. He predicts that personal robots will become common, potentially outnumbering humans in various industries.
Musk emphasized the significant value of Optimus to Tesla, suggesting it could surpass all other company assets. Currently, Tesla has deployed two Optimus prototypes working autonomously in their factory, and Musk remains optimistic about shipping the robots next year, despite acknowledging the challenges in making precise predictions.
