Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero expressed on Sunday that the Filipino-Chinese community can play a significant role in mitigating tensions between the Philippines and China over the West Philippine Sea (WPS).

Role of the Filipino-Chinese Community

“I believe the Federation of Filipino Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry and other Filipino-Chinese communities can play a large and broad role,” Escudero stated on Friday. He emphasized that these communities could serve as a bridge over the “raging and seemingly angry sea” between the two nations, helping resolve misunderstandings and fostering better communication.

Filipino-Chinese Friendship Day Speech

Escudero delivered these remarks during the 23rd Filipino-Chinese Friendship Day and the 49th anniversary of the diplomatic ties between the Philippines and China. He reiterated his hope that the Filipino-Chinese community could aid in de-escalating tensions and finding peaceful solutions.

Recent Tensions in the West Philippine Sea

Escudero had previously suggested addressing the West Philippine Sea issue through the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in light of China’s recent actions against Philippine troops. On Friday, the Philippine Coast Guard reported that the China Coast Guard blocked and rammed a Philippine Navy vessel conducting a medical evacuation in the contested waters.

Beijing’s Accusations

Meanwhile, Beijing has accused Manila of attempting to bring construction supplies to the Ayungin Shoal to establish a permanent presence. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning indicated that China might allow the delivery of living necessities or the evacuation of personnel if notified in advance by the Philippines.
