The Mt. Apo Natural Park (MANP) will remain closed until April 30, 2024, extending the initial 10-day restriction due to the ongoing El Niño weather phenomenon. This decision, made by the Protected Area Management Board (PAMB) of MANP, is in response to the heightened risk of wildfires and potential damage to the park’s ecosystems caused by the prolonged dry spell associated with El Niño.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Davao (DENR-11) emphasized that the closure aims to protect the biodiversity of Mt. Apo and ensure visitor safety. The determination to prolong the park’s closure reflects a precautionary approach to natural resource management and visitor safety amidst the adverse weather conditions.
During this period, all trekking and camping activities within the park are prohibited, affecting mountaineers and trekkers who had planned visits. The affected individuals are advised to contact local organizers to rearrange their activities. DENR-11 assures continuous monitoring of the situation, promising to keep the public informed about the park’s reopening.
This extended closure serves as a reminder of the impact of climate phenomena like El Niño on natural habitats and the need for proactive measures to safeguard these environments and their inhabitants.
