A Filipino boat fitter aboard an oil tanker in Indonesia was killed, while another sustained injuries, after an anchor chain snapped during troubleshooting work on March 10.
According to a “24 Oras” report, Junry Popera and Romulo Gollayan were attempting to free a stuck anchor when the chain unexpectedly loosened, striking both men. Popera took the brunt of the impact and died, while Gollayan was hospitalized.
Popera’s wife, Elsie, believes the accident could have been prevented, suggesting that safety checks may have been overlooked. She is now in talks with the oil tanker’s owner, her husband’s agency, and the Overseas Workers Welfare Association (OWWA) regarding possible legal action and compensation.
The ship’s principal has promised to cover expenses, and Popera had insurance coverage. His body remains in Indonesia for autopsy as his family seeks justice.
