Map Mishap The US military’s experimental aquatic drone, the Manta Ray, is supposed to be stealthy. However, Google Maps enthusiasts have spotted it docked openly at Port Hueneme naval base in California, looking quite out of place, according to The New York Post.
Caught on Camera Despite its intended secrecy, the Manta Ray can be clearly seen on Google Maps, nestled between two conventional seafaring vessels. The design of this uncrewed underwater vehicle (UUV) stands out, much like an exotic sea creature out of its element.
Under Wraps? The extent of the Manta Ray’s confidentiality is uncertain. Northrop Grumman, its manufacturer, showcased the drone in recent footage during its first full-scale test off the Californian coast. However, the military has not disclosed its specific dimensions, which are now easily estimated thanks to its visibility on Google Maps.
Water Warrior The Manta Ray, developed by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) since 2020, is designed for long-range and long-term underwater operations. It can “hibernate” on the seafloor, operating in a low-power mode without needing to refuel. As an uncrewed vehicle, it avoids the complications of human-operated submarines and can be modularly disassembled, repaired, and possibly reconfigured for different missions. Details about its power source and potential weaponry remain undisclosed.
