In a gripping display of skill and strategy, the Strong Group Athletics from the Philippines clinched a remarkable victory, edging out Homenetmen of Lebanon with a score of 104-95. This triumph marked their stellar 3-0 start in the 33rd Dubai International Basketball Championship, thanks in no small part to the standout performances of Dwight Howard and Andray Blatche.
Dwight Howard, celebrated for his defensive prowess as a three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year, showcased his dominance on the court by amassing a whopping 32 points, accompanied by seven rebounds and five steals. His performance ensured that the Philippine side stayed at the forefront of Group B, sharing the top spot with Libya’s Al Ahli Tripoli.
Andray Blatche, not to be outdone, made a significant impact, particularly in the critical fourth quarter. It was here that Blatche truly shone, contributing 15 of his total 18 points, along with six rebounds and four assists, to secure the win.
Prior to this nail-biting game, Strong Group had already demonstrated their prowess by defeating the UAE national team and Syria’s Al Wahda, marking a commendable start to the championship. Homenetmen, on the other hand, faced a challenging start with a 0-2 record.
The game was a rollercoaster of emotions, with momentum initially favoring the Lebanese team. However, the squad led by Charles Tiu exhibited resilience and tactical acumen, overturning a halftime deficit to emerge victorious. The turning point was a formidable third quarter, where Strong Group outscored their opponents 29 to 19, setting the stage for Blatche’s fourth-quarter heroics.
Supporting the lead duo, Kevin Quiambao delivered a standout performance, notably sealing the game with a spectacular one-handed putback slam, contributing a total of 19 points. Andre Roberson and Mckenzie Moore also made valuable contributions, scoring 13 and 12 points respectively.
Zach Lofton spearheaded the effort for Homenetmen, delivering an impressive 37 points, but ultimately, it wasn’t enough to counter the combined might of Howard, Blatche, and the Strong Group Athletics.
The victory not only highlighted the individual talents of Howard and Blatche but also underscored the cohesive strength and strategic depth of the Strong Group Athletics, promising more exciting basketball action as the tournament progresses.
