The Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) has announced plans to hold a rally opposing impeachment moves against Vice President Sara Duterte.
The statement was made during a Wednesday night program on INC’s media outlet.
“Members of the INC are preparing a rally to express their support for President Bongbong Marcos’s stance against impeachment efforts. The INC agrees with the President that the government should prioritize addressing pressing national issues instead of pursuing impeachment,” the host said, quoting the official statement.
The INC also emphasized its commitment to peace, stating: “The INC stands for peace. We oppose any form of unrest, regardless of its source.”
President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. previously voiced his disapproval of impeachment plans against Duterte, stressing that such actions would not benefit the Filipino people. Marcos confirmed he had urged lawmakers via text to refrain from filing an impeachment complaint.
Currently, Vice President Duterte is facing two separate impeachment complaints.
On Monday, an advocacy group filed a complaint accusing her of corruption, bribery, betrayal of public trust, and other high crimes, endorsed by Akbayan Party-list Rep. Perci Cendaña. On Wednesday, a coalition of over 70 representatives from various sectors lodged another complaint, citing alleged misuse of confidential funds. This complaint was endorsed by the Makabayan bloc.
Despite these developments, Rep. Joel Chua, chairperson of the House Committee on Good Government and Public Accountability, said no impeachment discussions took place during a gathering of 200 House lawmakers with President Marcos at Malacañang on Wednesday evening.
