Israel has criticized Qatar for allegedly playing a double role in Gaza ceasefire negotiations, calling on the Gulf state to “stop playing both sides” and clarify its stance—whether it supports “civilization or Hamas,” according to a statement from the Israeli Prime Minister’s office on Saturday.

Qatar swiftly rejected the remarks as “inflammatory,” saying they undermine diplomatic efforts and lack moral responsibility. Foreign ministry spokesperson Majed Al-Ansari posted on social media that the Israeli claims distort the nature of Qatar’s role and ignore the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Al-Ansari emphasized that the release of hostages has only been achieved through mediation, not military force, and criticized Israel’s narrative of the conflict. He pointed to the blockade on Gaza, widespread starvation, lack of medical supplies, and the politicization of humanitarian aid.

While Egypt and Qatar continue to mediate, talks remain stalled. Israel demands Hamas disarm and be excluded from future governance, while Hamas insists on a permanent ceasefire and Israeli withdrawal before releasing any more hostages.

Israel’s campaign was launched following the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack that killed 1,200 people and took 251 hostages. Since then, more than 50,000 Palestinians have died, with aid groups warning of a looming humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.
