MANILA – Senator JV Ejercito has urged the Philippine National Police (PNP) and local government units (LGUs) to establish permanent checkpoints along Marilaque Highway to curb reckless motorcycle stunts and accidents in the area.
Speaking at the Kapihan sa Senado forum, Ejercito noted that Marilaque—popular for its scenic views and numerous cafes—has become a playground for motorcyclists, with many engaging in dangerous stunts, including the viral “Superman” position, where riders lie prone on their speeding bikes.
The Highway Patrol Group (HPG) reported that one accident occurs daily along the highway, with 13 recorded incidents in January alone. A particularly notorious stretch, “Devil’s Corner” in Tanay, Rizal, has become a hotspot for riders performing exhibitions.
Ejercito, a motorcycle enthusiast himself, admitted he has avoided Marilaque for the past two years due to safety concerns. He previously worked with authorities on a “Make Marilaque Safe” campaign, but reckless riding has continued.
Meanwhile, Senator Bato Dela Rosa expressed support for stricter monitoring along the entire highway, calling for a stronger PNP presence with backing from LGUs and the HPG.
