The Makabayan coalition denounced the alleged red-tagging of its senatorial candidates during its campaign swing in the Bicol Region, which concluded on March 24.
In a statement, the group claimed that on March 22, the Philippine Army reportedly blocked campaign volunteers from the Kilusang Magbubukid ng Bicol. The situation was resolved after senatorial candidate Danilo Ramos spoke directly with military personnel, allowing the volunteers to proceed and attend the forum.
Makabayan also reported an incident where flyers labeling their senatorial candidates Teddy Casiño and Jerome Adonis as communists were scattered outside the Makabayan-Camarines Sur office.
“We condemn the NTF-ELCAC and its enablers for spearheading these red-tagging attacks against progressive candidates and activists,” Makabayan Bicol stated.
Encouraging public resistance, they added, “Let us not be afraid. Let’s unite against the soaring costs of food, electricity, and basic needs. Together, we fight for livelihood, rights, and national sovereignty.”
The Bicol campaign was joined by party-list allies Bayan Muna, Gabriela Women’s Party, and Kabataan Partylist.

Policy Focus: Transport, Oil, and Wages
PISTON national president and Makabayan candidate Mody Floranda pushed for a clear local government stance against the jeepney phaseout. “Our top legislative priority is to protect drivers’ livelihoods. We will fight both inside and outside the Senate,” he said.
Candidate Liza Maza highlighted the need for oil industry reform—calling for regulated pricing, centralized procurement, and transparency in oil price breakdowns.
Makabayan also vowed to work toward abolishing regional wage boards, citing worsening poverty and inflation as key concerns.
