The inaugural Manila International Film Festival (MIFF) has emerged as a vibrant platform, celebrating the rich tapestry of Philippine cinema and fostering an environment of collaboration and recognition. The festival’s success, as articulated by a media consultant to INQUIRER.net, was not just about screening films but also about kindling the Balikbayan spirit, a term deeply rooted in the Filipino culture, symbolizing the return to one’s homeland.
“It is heartwarming to see Filipinos, Fil-Ams, and foreigners come in droves to watch the movies and display the same passion, hunger, and joy that we have for Philippine cinema. It takes a village to move mountains, and we are very grateful to our community partners and sponsors who have shown support to make our inaugural Manila International Film Festival a resounding success! The Balikbayan spirit is indeed alive in this festival, and we are proof of that. As they say, ‘If you build it, they will come,'” the media consultant remarked with enthusiasm.
The timing of the MIFF was strategic, coinciding with the bustling Hollywood awards season, an intentional move to ensure the spotlight is cast on the Filipino cinematic brilliance. The festival not only showcased the top films from the Metro Manila Film Festival but also aimed to sustain the momentum of Filipino creativity and introduce it to a broader audience, including Hollywood’s elite.
“We launched the Manila International Film Festival in November. Since we are featuring the 10 movies that made it to the Metro Manila Film Festival which ended in December, we wanted to highlight them immediately to keep the momentum. But yes, it is also the busiest time in Hollywood since it is the awards season. We believe it is the right time to spotlight Philippine cinema during this time so Hollywood filmmakers can take notice of what the Philippines can offer,” the media consultant elaborated.
The success of MIFF is a testament to the universal appeal and potential of Philippine cinema, and it marks a significant step towards fostering global recognition and appreciation of Filipino talent in the filmmaking industry.
