President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has directed law enforcement to intensify efforts against small-scale drug dealers while ensuring that due process is strictly followed.
In an interview with broadcaster Anthony Taberna, Marcos stressed that his administration’s anti-drug campaign will not involve killings, distancing himself from the controversial methods of his predecessor, Rodrigo Duterte.
“We need to go back to the grassroots and continue the major drug busts. But we should also focus on the small offenders,” he said.
He emphasized the importance of police visibility in drug-affected communities, noting that Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla has been tasked to improve on-ground presence through the “Cops on the Beat” initiative—ensuring daily patrols and better surveillance.
While pushing for accountability among low-level drug offenders, Marcos assured that major operations against drug syndicates will continue.
He reiterated that the government would avoid violent tactics, saying, “We’re not going to kill suspects just based on suspicion.”
In response, the Philippine National Police (PNP) confirmed it is already developing measures to execute the President’s directive. PNP Drug Enforcement Group head Police Brigadier General Jason Capoy has been instructed to present a strategy on handling small-scale drug cases effectively.
