President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. officially signed the Magna Carta of Filipino Seafarers into law on Monday, marking a significant milestone in safeguarding the rights and welfare of Filipino seafarers. The ceremonial signing of Republic Act 12021 took place at Malacañang Palace, emphasizing its status as a priority measure for the administration.
The new law ensures the protection of Filipino seafarers’ rights, aligning the Philippines with international maritime conventions. It also reinforces the country’s commitment to ensuring seafarers receive proper training, fair wages, secure contracts, and benefits.
President Marcos lauded Filipino seafarers as modern-day heroes, crucial to both global trade and the well-being of countless Filipino families. He noted that the Magna Carta would help the seafarers meet global maritime standards, particularly in training and certification.
The law also seeks to protect seafarers from unfair practices like “ambulance chasing” and strengthens their rights to collective bargaining, education, safe travel, and immediate medical attention. Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero highlighted that the Magna Carta guarantees fair treatment in case of maritime accidents and ensures accountability for all stakeholders involved.
