President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has tasked the new head of the Philippine National Police (PNP), Police General Nicolas Torre III, with two critical missions: clean up the force and make the police more visible and responsive in communities.

Speaking during the official turnover ceremony where Torre took over from outgoing chief Rommel Francisco Marbil, Marcos emphasized the importance of integrity and swift justice. “Keep the police force clean and honorable. Speed up investigations on officers accused of breaking the law so justice can be served quickly,” the President said.

He also called for greater police visibility, stressing the need for officers to be present on the streets and ready to respond when the public needs help.

Marcos acknowledged growing challenges such as transnational crimes, cyber threats, extremist violence, and police misconduct. He urged the PNP to remain engaged with communities and various sectors in promoting peace and order.

On anti-drug efforts, Marcos encouraged Torre to continue the crackdown on both big-time and small-time drug dealers, in collaboration with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA). He reminded officers not to misuse their power for personal gain, urging them to be role models of fairness, peace, and progress.

“Let your badge be a daily reminder to serve with honor, not to command with privilege,” Marcos added.

General Torre has a notable track record. As the head of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG), he led the arrest and transfer of former President Rodrigo Duterte to the International Criminal Court. He also oversaw the arrest of controversial religious leader Apollo Quiboloy last year in Davao City.

Torre now holds the distinction of being the first Philippine National Police Academy graduate to be appointed PNP Chief.
