President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. called on the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ Southern Luzon Command (SOLCOM) to strengthen efforts in safeguarding the country’s maritime territories and ensuring peace amid increasing challenges.
During his visit to Camp General Guillermo Nakar in Lucena City, Marcos highlighted SOLCOM’s evolving responsibilities, which now include territorial defense in addition to addressing internal threats.
Focus on Maritime Security
“I am sure you are aware of the growing challenges we face. We need to continue our work to ensure the safety of our islands and sovereignty over our maritime territories,” Marcos told the troops.
The President expressed confidence in SOLCOM’s ability to adapt, emphasizing the need to allocate more resources for territorial security as the threat level of communist groups diminishes.
Transition to Law Enforcement Operations
Marcos stated that efforts to address communist insurgencies are paving the way for transitioning internal security operations to law enforcement agencies.
“We need to reduce the activity of communist terrorist groups to the point where the AFP [Armed Forces of the Philippines] can hand over internal threat management to law enforcement,” he explained.
Recognition of SOLCOM Efforts
Marcos commended the troops for their contributions to anti-insurgency campaigns and disaster response efforts. He led the conferment of medals to soldiers who demonstrated exemplary service.
Recipients of the Golden Cross Medal included 1Lt. Billy Canacan and 2nd Lt. Green Marc Augusto of the Philippine Army. Maj. Bryann Oria and 1Lt. Merjorie Ballesteros received the Silver Cross Medal, while TSgt. Noli Lomeda of the Philippine Air Force was awarded the Bronze Cross Medal.
“I congratulate the awardees for their outstanding work. Your achievements reflect the dedication and effectiveness of our troops,” Marcos said.
Looking Ahead
Marcos expressed optimism about fully transitioning resources to territorial defense while maintaining a high success rate in internal security operations. He emphasized the importance of SOLCOM’s dual role in safeguarding national security and responding to calamities.
