As floodwaters rise in Marikina City due to super typhoon Carina, Mayor Marcelino Teodoro is urgently appealing for additional high-powered rubber boats and medical supplies to aid in rescue operations and assist evacuees.

Flooding has reached roof levels in Barangay Sto. Niño near the Marikina River. Mayor Teodoro emphasized the need for more robust boats to navigate the strong currents and safely evacuate stranded residents. “We only have five boats. Effective rescues require multiple boats working in tandem to prevent being swept away,” Teodoro explained to GMA Integrated News.

In addition to the rescue equipment, there is a critical need for vitamins, medicines, and volunteer doctors to tend to evacuees. “The water here in Farmers 1 is above head level. We have bedridden residents who need assistance,” Teodoro stated.

He highlighted the health challenges faced by evacuees, many of whom are now suffering from exposure to the severe conditions. “We need volunteer doctors for medical attention, as many have fallen ill from prolonged exposure to the rain,” he added.

The Marikina River’s water level has reached 20.5 meters, nearing the 21.5-meter level recorded during Typhoon Ulysses in 2020. A state of calamity has been declared across Metro Manila due to the extensive flooding.
