SEOUL — North Korea conducted a successful strategic cruise missile test on Saturday, state media KCNA reported on Sunday, with leader Kim Jong Un personally overseeing the launch.
The underwater-to-surface missiles traveled 1,500 kilometers, flying for over two hours before hitting their targets, according to the report. The missile test was described as a demonstration of an “important weapon system” designed to strengthen the nation’s defense capabilities amid changing regional security dynamics.
Threats Against the US
In a separate statement, North Korea’s foreign ministry pledged the “toughest counteraction” against the United States, accusing Washington of infringing on Pyongyang’s sovereignty through its military alliance and joint exercises with South Korea.
Tensions have escalated as US President Donald Trump, in an interview Thursday, mentioned the possibility of re-establishing communication with Kim Jong Un, citing the “working relationship” they developed during his first term.
Kim’s Continued Focus on Military Expansion
Kim emphasized North Korea’s ongoing efforts to bolster its military power. “North Korea’s war deterrence means are being perfected more thoroughly,” Kim stated, reiterating the nation’s commitment to defending peace and stability through advanced military capabilities.
North Korea’s missile development has intensified recently, with state media reporting earlier this month that Kim oversaw the successful test of a new intermediate-range hypersonic ballistic missile (IRBM).
Regional Concerns
South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff confirmed that multiple cruise missiles were launched from inland areas towards waters off North Korea’s west coast on Saturday afternoon.
The missile tests come amid growing concerns over North Korea’s intentions and its continued defiance of international sanctions. Analysts believe these actions aim to demonstrate the country’s military readiness and deter perceived threats from the US and its allies.
Outlook
As tensions rise in the region, diplomatic efforts to address North Korea’s weapons program remain stalled. The latest missile test underscores Pyongyang’s intent to continue developing its arsenal while challenging the US and South Korea’s military alliances.
