Malacañang has announced that Monday, January 27, 2025, will be a Muslim holiday in observance of Isra Wal Mi’raj, also known as the Night Journey and Ascension of the Prophet Muhammad.
Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin clarified that the holiday will apply specifically to the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) and other Muslim-majority areas identified under the Philippine Muslim Code.
“This is not a national holiday but a Muslim holiday only in BARMM and other Muslim areas defined in the Muslim Code,” Bersamin explained.
Muslims in regions where the holiday is not officially observed, such as the National Capital Region (NCR), will be excused from reporting to work, he added.
Significance of Isra Wal Mi’raj
Isra Wal Mi’raj commemorates the Prophet Muhammad’s miraculous journey from Mecca to the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem and his ascension through the seven stages of heaven. It is a significant event in Islam, symbolizing spiritual enlightenment and devotion.
President’s Message to Filipino Muslims
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. extended his well wishes to Filipino Muslims observing Isra Wal Mi’raj and encouraged them to pursue diligence and perseverance in their endeavors.
“Success comes after diligence,” the President said in his message, expressing support for the Muslim community as they mark this important occasion.
