MANILA — A 58-year-old man was fatally struck by a counterflowing motorcycle while crossing Nagtahan Link Bridge in Pandacan, Manila, on Sunday night. CCTV footage revealed the pedestrian, carrying an umbrella, was hit by the motorcycle, causing both to be thrown to the ground.
The victim was declared dead on arrival at the hospital, while the 49-year-old rider sustained chest and foot injuries. Barangay tanod Tony Abueva reported that the rider appeared intoxicated, and his family confirmed plans to file a reckless imprudence resulting in homicide charge against him.
The suspect, who admitted to counterflowing as a shortcut, has pleaded for a settlement, expressing remorse and describing the incident as an accident. However, the victim’s family is firm on pursuing legal action, citing the loss and disregard for their father’s life.
Police and barangay officials are now considering stricter enforcement in the area, where counterflowing motorcyclists are commonly observed, to prevent further accidents.
