A man who filed a petition with the Commission on Elections (Comelec) against alleged flying voters in Pualas, Lanao del Sur, was shot dead on Christmas Day, December 25, 2024.
The victim, Zainodin Sarip Guro, 48, was on his way to attend church when a gunman on a motorcycle opened fire, killing him instantly.
Details of the Incident
- Family Statement: According to a relative identified as “Farid,” the victim had no known enemies. However, his nephew, also named Zainodin Sarip, was a petitioner in the case against alleged flying voters in Barangay Tomarompong.
- Police Findings: Four empty bullet shells were recovered from the crime scene.
Election-Related Motive Not Confirmed
The Lanao del Sur Police Provincial Office has not classified the incident as election-related.
“For it to be considered election-related, either the victim or suspect must be an incumbent politician. The victim here was a farmer and carpenter, and the suspect is still unidentified,” said Lt. Col. Jonathan Jamis, Deputy Police Director for Operations.
Separate Shooting Incident in Pualas
On the same day, another violent altercation occurred in Pualas.
- Incident: An incumbent barangay chair allegedly shot the husband of another barangay chair during a dispute.
- Victim’s Condition: The victim sustained a gunshot wound to the feet.
- Suspect Status: The suspect, reportedly intoxicated at the time, is still at large.
“So far, it appears to be a case of a heated argument escalating into violence,” Jamis added.
These incidents highlight ongoing tensions in the region, though authorities are urging caution in drawing links to election-related activities. Investigations are ongoing.
