The Philippine Consulate General in Vancouver expressed deep concern on Sunday following a tragic incident where a vehicle crashed into a crowd during a Filipino street festival, leaving several people dead.

In an official statement, the consulate extended its sympathies to the victims of the incident at the Lapu Lapu Day Block Party.

“As we await further details, we join the community in praying for strength and resilience, guided by the spirit of bayanihan during this difficult time,” the consulate said.

It remains unclear whether any Filipinos were among the casualties.

According to a report from Agence France-Presse, the driver involved in the crash has been taken into police custody. The tragic event occurred around 8 p.m. near East 41st Avenue and Fraser Street.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney shared his condolences via X (formerly Twitter), stating, “I offer my deepest condolences to the loved ones of those killed and injured, to the Filipino Canadian community, and to everyone in Vancouver. We are all mourning with you.” He also commended first responders for their swift action and said the government is closely monitoring the situation.

The incident has cast a shadow over what was meant to be a vibrant celebration of Filipino heritage.
