The Philippines has reaffirmed its commitment to peace in the South China Sea, responding to allegations by China of territorial encroachment. According to the Philippine military’s spokesperson, Colonel Medel Aguilar, the nation adheres to international law and focuses on implementing domestic law without provoking conflict. Aguilar accused China of engaging in dangerous maneuvers and violations within the disputed waters, pointing out that Manila’s activities are confined to its territorial waters and exclusive economic zone.

Chinese state media previously accused the Philippines of infringing on China’s territory in the South China Sea, alleging collusion with external forces and endangering regional peace. However, Aguilar emphasized that many countries support the Philippines, recognizing its valid concerns and its role in upholding international law as a means to peacefully resolve maritime disputes.

The dispute has led to increased tensions, with both Beijing and Manila exchanging accusations. These include an incident where China allegedly rammed a ship carrying the Philippine military chief. Despite China’s expansive claims over most of the South China Sea, an international tribunal invalidated these claims in 2016 in a case brought by the Philippines, a decision Beijing rejects. The Philippines continues to assert its rights within the West Philippine Sea, which includes parts of the South China Sea within its exclusive economic zone and continental shelf, and regularly conducts resupply missions to support its soldiers stationed in the region.
