Pope Francis, despite ongoing lung inflammation and breathing difficulties, appeared at a weekly audience in the Vatican. The 86-year-old Pope, who had part of a lung removed in his youth, recently underwent a CT scan for flu-related symptoms, ruling out pneumonia but confirming lung inflammation. His condition remains stable with no fever, and he continues to receive antibiotic therapy.
During the audience, the Pope limited his speech, letting an aide read his main text. Nonetheless, he was warmly received with applause and chants, and he managed to speak on critical issues. He called for peace and aid in Gaza and Ukraine, highlighting the detrimental impact of war, especially on ordinary people, and criticizing the profit motives of arms manufacturers. Despite a knee ailment that sometimes necessitates a wheelchair, Pope Francis used a cane for walking at the event, which also featured a brief circus performance.
