March 9, 2025 – Pope Francis is responding well to treatment for double pneumonia and is showing gradual improvement, the Vatican confirmed on Saturday.

The 88-year-old pontiff has been hospitalized at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital for over three weeks due to a severe respiratory infection. While doctors have noted a slight but steady recovery, they remain cautious to ensure continued progress.

Stable but Under Close Observation

  • Pope Francis remains fever-free, with stable blood test results.
  • He continues to receive oxygen to aid breathing, using a small hose during the day and non-invasive ventilation at night.
  • Despite his hospitalization, he has continued working, approving the appointments of four bishops and sending messages to Catholic groups.

Faithful Gather in Prayer

Outside Gemelli Hospital, well-wishers have placed candles, flowers, and prayer beads near a statue of Pope John Paul II, honoring the pope’s resilience.

Maria Neve, a devotee from Naples, expressed her admiration:
“He is an incredible person who gives so much to others, and we, in turn, must give back to him.”

Pope Francis has not appeared in public since his admission, marking his longest absence in nearly 12 years as head of the Catholic Church.

Outlook on Recovery

Though Vatican updates have been cautiously optimistic, doctors not involved in his care warn that his age and prior lung issues—stemming from a partial lung removal in his youth—could prolong his recovery.

For the fourth consecutive week, he will miss his Sunday prayer with pilgrims. The duration of his hospital stay remains uncertain.
