RIZAL, CAGAYAN — Rizal Mayor Joel Ruma was fatally shot during a campaign event in Barangay Illuru Sur on Wednesday evening, according to authorities from the Police Regional Office 2 (PRO2).
The incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. Ruma sustained a gunshot wound to the right shoulder, with the bullet exiting through his upper back. He was rushed to Tuao District Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival at 10:31 p.m.
Two other individuals were also injured during the attack. One suffered a gunshot wound to the right elbow, while the other was hit in the chest and lower back. Both were brought to Tuao District Hospital and later transferred to Cagayan Valley Medical Center in Tuguegarao City for treatment.
In response, local police have launched hot pursuit operations and set up high-risk checkpoints in nearby areas in an effort to apprehend the suspects. The Cagayan Provincial Forensic Unit is currently processing the crime scene.
“We strongly condemn this act of violence, especially as we prepare for peaceful 2025 elections,” said PRO2 chief Police Brigadier General Antonio Marallag Jr. “We are committed to finding those responsible and bringing them to justice. We urge the public to assist us by reporting any helpful information.”
Authorities are calling on citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity that could help in identifying the attackers.
