Unintended Takeoff: Rocket Mishap Sparks Forest Fire
A private Chinese aerospace company, Space Pioneer, experienced a dramatic mishap when a Tianlong-3 rocket unexpectedly launched during a static test, ultimately crashing into a mountain near the city of Gongyi.
Accidental Launch and Crash
According to The Guardian, the Beijing Tianbing company, also known as Space Pioneer, reported on WeChat that the first stage of the Tianlong-3 test went “normally” until an unexpected “structural failure” caused the rocket to separate and launch. The onboard computer quickly shut down, leading the rocket to crash into a wooded mountain area 1.5 kilometers from the test site, resulting in a forest fire that was promptly extinguished.
Safety and Impact
Fortunately, no injuries were reported, despite the rocket’s unintended flight over the densely populated city of Gongyi, home to 800,000 people. Videos circulating on social media and news outlets show the rocket’s fiery crash into the forested hills.
Industry Rivalry and Future Prospects
The Tianlong-3 rocket is a two-stage reusable vehicle, comparable to SpaceX’s Falcon 9. However, unlike SpaceX, which tests in sparsely populated areas, Space Pioneer conducts its tests in urban regions. Despite this setback, the company aims to proceed with orbital launches in the near future.
