The highly anticipated 3-point shootout rematch between Stephen Curry and Sabrina Ionescu will not take place during this year’s NBA All-Star Weekend in San Francisco.
Despite hints from both players about a Part II following Curry’s 29-26 victory last year, the NBA confirmed on Thursday that the rematch won’t happen due to a lack of an agreed format that could elevate the event.
Reports suggest that Curry and Ionescu were open to a new format involving Caitlin Clark and possibly Klay Thompson, but Clark declined, preferring to make her 3-point contest debut at the WNBA All-Star Weekend instead.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver had previously expressed confidence in a rematch, making the event’s cancellation unexpected.
Curry, 36, is a four-time NBA champion and the league’s all-time 3-point leader, while Ionescu, 27, holds a 36.4% career 3-point shooting percentage in the WNBA.
