Authorities have discovered a third vessel leaking environmentally harmful material off the coast of Bataan, as reported by GMA Integrated News’ John Consulta.
The Motor Vessel (MV) Mirola 1 was found tilted and leaking oil near the shore of Mariveles town. Oil was observed seeping from the vessel’s tanks into the ocean. The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Counter Intelligence Division, along with NBI Bataan, Naval Intelligence, and Freeport Area of Bataan Police, found the vessel deserted.
The NBI is investigating the possibility of oil smuggling, as MV Mirola 1 was previously involved in the pilfering of over 30,000 liters of diesel last year. Efforts are ongoing to locate the vessel’s owner.
This incident follows two other recent maritime accidents in the area. The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) reported the sinking of Motor Tanker (MTKR) Jason Bradley in Mariveles on July 27, which was carrying 5,500 liters of diesel. The vessel rests at a depth of 9 meters, 600 yards from the shore. A two-week salvage operation is underway, with spill booms deployed to contain the spread of diesel.
Earlier, the MT Terranova sank off Limay town in Bataan on July 25 amid heavy rains and rough seas. Carrying 1.4 million liters of industrial fuel, it has been leaking, posing a threat to the marine ecosystems in Bulacan, Cavite, and potentially Metro Manila. Siphoning efforts for the MT Terranova have been delayed to seal some of its valves before the operation can begin
