In celebration of National Language Month, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has called on the public to embrace and cherish the Filipino language.
“This occasion serves as an important reminder to love the Filipino language with all our hearts and with consciousness that our language showcases our incredible identity as Filipinos,” President Marcos stated in a message released on Thursday.
Marcos emphasized that the celebration is also a call to enrich the language, highlighting that Filipino literature can foster a love for the country and inspire the younger generation to appreciate their heritage. He urged the public to deeply value these literary works.
Presidential Proclamation No. 1041, issued in 1997 by former President Fidel Ramos, established August as “Buwan ng Wikang Pambansa” or National Language Month. Marcos noted that this proclamation has been instrumental in strengthening national unity and self-awareness.
“Some of the benefits mentioned include having a national language, its significant contribution to achieving our independence, and its power to open our eyes and minds to the importance, experiences, and abilities of everyone,” he added.
Marcos’ appeal aligns with various ongoing efforts to promote the Filipino language and literature, reinforcing its role in unifying the nation and preserving cultural identity.
