In a surprising turn of events, the musical landscape on TikTok has seen a significant shift with the disappearance of tracks from beloved OPM artists Juan Karlos, Zack Tabudlo, and others. Iconic songs such as “Ere” and “Yakap,” which have enjoyed viral status on the platform, are now notably absent, leaving fans puzzled and disappointed.
While alternative versions of these hits, including a rendition of “Ere” by Island Records Philippines and a user-uploaded version of Zack Tabudlo’s song, remain accessible, the original recordings have vanished from TikTok’s music library. This removal stems from an unresolved licensing negotiation between TikTok and Universal Music Group (UMG) Philippines, the artists’ label and a subsidiary of the global music titan, Universal Music Group.
The impasse reached a climax at the end of January when it was revealed that UMG’s roster of artists would no longer feature on TikTok. The contention revolves around the financial terms of the licensing agreement, with UMG asserting that TikTok’s proposed compensation for artists and songwriters significantly undercuts the industry standard offered by comparable major social media platforms.
TikTok has rebutted UMG’s claims, labeling them as misleading and arguing that UMG’s stance undermines the interests of artists, songwriters, and the music-loving community on TikTok. This dispute has also led to the withdrawal of international stars under UMG, including Taylor Swift and BTS, from TikTok’s expansive music offerings.
As the situation unfolds, representatives from UMG Philippines, along with artists Juan Karlos and Zack Tabudlo, have yet to make a public statement regarding the matter. Despite this setback on TikTok, fans can still enjoy their music on other streaming services, such as Spotify, where Juan Karlos notably became the first Filipino to enter the Top 100 global charts last year.
