US President Donald Trump is reportedly considering slashing another $1 billion in federal funding to Harvard University, this time targeting health-related research, according to a Wall Street Journal report. This move marks a further escalation in the administration’s clash with elite institutions over their handling of pro-Palestinian protests.

Previously, the administration had already frozen $2.3 billion in funding to Harvard, accusing the university of tolerating antisemitism by allowing the protests. The administration also warned it might revoke Harvard’s tax-exempt status.

Harvard has resisted pressure, asserting that government control over its student body, faculty, and curriculum would compromise its independence. The tension heightened after Harvard publicly disclosed a confidential April 11 letter from the administration listing stringent demands, including a ban on certain student groups, greater cooperation with law enforcement, and new rules on foreign students.

Officials were reportedly surprised by Harvard’s decision to publicize the letter, which they had viewed as the basis for private negotiations. Initially, Trump officials planned a softer approach compared to their stance on Columbia University but are now stepping up the pressure.

The White House and Harvard have not commented on the report. Trump’s broader crackdown on universities since taking office in January is rooted in claims they mishandled protests and fostered antisemitism. Protesters, including Jewish voices, argue their critiques of Israel are being mischaracterized.
