Former U.S. President Donald Trump sparked controversy on Sunday by stating he’s “not joking” about seeking a third presidential term—even though the U.S. Constitution limits presidents to two.
In a phone interview with NBC News, Trump directly addressed the speculation he’s been fueling for months. “No, I’m not joking,” he said when asked about a potential third run. Still, he noted, “it is far too early to think about it.”
Trump, who returned to the White House for a second non-consecutive term beginning January 20, declined to explain what “methods” might allow him to pursue a third term, saying only, “There are methods which you could do it, as you know.”
The U.S. Constitution’s 22nd Amendment bars anyone from being elected president more than twice, regardless of whether those terms are consecutive.
Trump’s comments are likely to stir debate about executive power and constitutional limits, especially as the 2028 election cycle draws closer.
