WEST MIFFLIN, Pennsylvania — U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans on Friday to raise tariffs on imported steel from 25% to 50%, intensifying trade tensions and reinforcing his commitment to reviving the domestic steel industry.

Speaking at a rally at U.S. Steel Corporation’s Irvin Works facility, Trump stated, “We’re going to increase the steel tariffs from 25% to 50%. This move will give even more protection to our American steel producers.”

Earlier in February, Trump had already raised tariffs on both steel and aluminum to 25% across the board, eliminating all previous exemptions. The upcoming hike is expected to affect millions of tons of imports from countries like Canada, Brazil, Mexico, and South Korea, which had previously enjoyed duty-free access to the U.S. market.

The move is part of Trump’s broader strategy to reduce reliance on foreign materials and support U.S. manufacturing.
