MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) confirmed on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, the tragic deaths of two overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Beirut, Lebanon. The victims, who served as long-time household service workers, were reportedly held hostage and fatally shot by their employer on April 15, 2026.

The incident has sparked outrage and immediate government intervention as the DMW coordinates with international authorities to ensure justice for the deceased.

According to the DMW statement, the two Filipinos were veteran domestic employees at a residence in the Lebanese capital.

  • The Attack: The victims were held against their will before being killed during a hostage situation within the employer’s home.
  • Suspect in Custody: Lebanese police have already arrested the employer, who remains in custody as of Tuesday morning.
  • Investigation: The DMW, in tandem with the Philippine Embassy in Lebanon, is closely monitoring the local police investigation and the subsequent filing of criminal charges.

The Philippine government has moved swiftly to support the grieving families:

  • Family Support: DMW officials are scheduled to visit the victims’ families in the Philippines to provide immediate bereavement assistance.
  • Repatriation Coordination: Authorities are working on the administrative requirements for the repatriation of the victims’ remains.
  • Legal Aid: The DMW is committed to providing legal resources to ensure the perpetrator is held fully accountable under Lebanese law.

The tragedy occurs amidst heightened regional tensions and ongoing efforts by the DMW to repatriate Filipinos from volatile areas in the Middle East. While the DMW recently reported the successful return of over 4,200 Filipinos from across the region, this incident underscores the persistent vulnerabilities faced by household service workers.

“The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has extended assistance to the families… and will continue to provide support throughout this difficult process,” the agency stated.
