CEBU CITY, Philippines — The Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) officially inaugurated the Wildcats PlayLab on April 17, 2026, marking a significant milestone for collegiate gaming in the Visayas. The facility is the first dedicated university-run hub in the region designed specifically for competitive esports, professional broadcast production, and digital content creation.
The project grew from a student-led proposal during the inaugural season of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) Esports League (CEL), highlighting the rising demand for specialized infrastructure in the academic sphere.
The concept for the Wildcats PlayLab originated from CEL student volunteers who recognized the limitations of using general-purpose computer labs for high-stakes tournaments.
- Specialized Infrastructure: Unlike functional but non-specialized computer rooms, the PlayLab features two dedicated gaming rooms, each outfitted with five high-performance gaming PCs to accommodate 5v5 team matches.
- Production Suite: The hub includes a separate room for professional-grade broadcast production, allowing students to learn the technical side of esports streaming and live event coverage.
- Spectator and Lounge Areas: To foster a community atmosphere, the facility includes a designated viewing area for fans and a second-floor mezzanine lounge where players and students can rest between matches.
CIT-U President Engr. Bernard Nicolas Villamor praised the student-led initiative, emphasizing that the hub is intended to promote a healthy balance between digital competition and academic excellence.
- Eligibility Requirements: Use of the facility is accessible to students across all academic programs, provided they maintain their academic eligibility and passing grades.
- Character Building: President Villamor noted that the PlayLab is “setting a standard where it’s not just about esports, it’s about hard work, discipline, and how you can balance your grades and esports.”
- Policy Crafting: The university is currently finalizing the full set of operational policies to ensure the fair and sustainable use of the specialized equipment.
As a member-school of CESAFI, CIT-U’s investment in the Wildcats PlayLab solidifies Cebu’s position as a burgeoning hub for Philippine esports. The university previously hosted the CEL’s inaugural season, and the new facility is expected to serve as the permanent home for future league broadcast operations.
By providing professional-grade tools within a university setting, CIT-U is bridging the gap between casual gaming and career paths in the global multibillion-dollar esports and digital media industries.
