The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has dispatched humanitarian aid to support the victims of Typhoon Carina, the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) reported on Monday.
Arrival of Aid
The humanitarian aid arrived at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 2 on July 30. Among those present to receive the aid were UAE Ambassador to the Philippines Mohamed Obaid Alqataam Alzaabi, Interior Secretary Benjamin Abalos, and Social Welfare and Development Secretary Rex Gatchalian.
“This assistance is a manifestation of the Philippines’ and the UAE’s continuing cooperation and commitment to support each other in times of need,” the MIAA stated.
Impact of Typhoon Carina
Metro Manila and several other provinces were placed under a state of calamity in July due to flooding caused by the Southwest Monsoon, which was intensified by Typhoon Carina. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council reported that the monsoon, along with Typhoon Carina and tropical cyclone Butchoy, affected 4,839,002 individuals or 1,317,111 families across the country. The death toll from these events stood at 39.
Additional Support
Previously, the UAE had donated food and essential items to those affected by Carina and the Southwest Monsoon. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council continues to monitor and address the needs of the affected population.
Typhoon Carina exited the Philippine Area of Responsibility on July 25.
