The University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons overcame an early deficit to claim a 73-65 victory over the De La Salle University (DLSU) Green Archers in Game 1 of the UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball finals on Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Second-Half Comeback

Trailing 41-37 at halftime, UP turned the game around with a strong defensive effort in the second half. The Fighting Maroons outscored the Green Archers 17-9 in the third quarter, taking a 54-50 lead heading into the final period.

Quentin Millora-Brown was instrumental early in the fourth quarter, converting two three-point plays while Aldous Torculas added a crucial triple to give UP its largest lead at 63-52.

Despite a spirited comeback attempt led by Mike Phillips, La Salle fell short. A potential goaltending call that could have narrowed the gap was reversed upon review, preserving UP’s momentum. A late three-pointer from Gerry Abadiano and clutch free throws from Harold Alarcon and JD Cagulangan sealed the win for the Fighting Maroons.

Key Performances

Millora-Brown delivered a career-high 17 points, nine rebounds, three assists, two steals, and a block. Cagulangan and Francis Lopez each added 13 points.

For La Salle, Kevin Quiambao scored 19 points in the first half but was limited to just one technical free throw in the second half. Phillips contributed 17 points, while EJ Gollena, who had 11 points in the first half, was held scoreless in the latter stages.

Coaches’ Insights

UP head coach Goldwin Monteverde highlighted the importance of defense in the win.

“We know that every game we play against La Salle, defense is really key to winning the game. I felt that in the second half, we had more intensity defensively and communicated better,” he said.

Monteverde also praised the team’s offensive adjustments, describing it as a “total team effort.”

UP now holds a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three finals. Game 2 is set for Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena, where the Fighting Maroons will look to clinch the championship.
