Authorities in Davao City intercepted a van carrying alleged smuggled cigarettes valued at over ₱9.8 million during a checkpoint operation.
The driver reportedly failed to provide documents proving ownership of the cargo or employment with the courier company identified on the van. The company manager later confirmed that the driver was not an employee, and the van was not part of their fleet.
Admission of Smuggling
According to police, the driver admitted that the cargo was smuggled. Approximately 251 boxes of cigarettes were confiscated during the operation.
Legal Action and Confiscation
The driver faces charges under the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act (RA 10863). The seized items have been turned over to the Bureau of Customs for further investigation.
