The China Coast Guard (CCG) vessel 5901, known as the “monster ship,” was detected near Lubang Island, Occidental Mindoro, on Monday morning, according to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG).

Ship Movement and Monitoring

The vessel was previously monitored 54 nautical miles from Capones Island, Zambales, within the Philippines’ 200-nautical-mile exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

“Two days ago, na-monitor natin siya sa coastline ng Zambales, sa Capones Island, Zambales. Yesterday, umangat na siya sa northern part ng Zambales. Ngayong umaga, as we speak, it is 80 nautical miles away from Lubang Island, Occidental Mindoro,” said PCG spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea, Commodore Jay Tarriela.

PCG Response and Radio Challenges

In response, the PCG deployed the BRP Cabra, a helicopter, and the PCG Caravan to monitor and challenge the Chinese vessel. National Security Council (NSC) assistant director general Jonathan Malaya confirmed that the ship is being closely shadowed to ensure compliance with international norms.

“We are monitoring it, in fact we’re shadowing it. BRP Cabra is there to monitor and shadow the every move of 5901,” Malaya stated.

Radio challenges to assert Philippine territorial rights within the EEZ are ongoing.

No Harassment or Dangerous Actions Reported

Thus far, the PCG reported no incidents of harassment or dangerous maneuvers by the Chinese ship. Filipino fishermen have been encouraged to continue their activities, with the PCG ensuring their safety in the area.

Concerns About Underwater Drones

Meanwhile, the Philippine Navy is investigating an underwater drone found near San Pascual, Masbate. Its ownership remains undetermined, though the PCG noted that similar devices have previously been linked to Chinese operations in Philippine waters.

The PCG and NSC remain vigilant, emphasizing their commitment to protecting the country’s maritime sovereignty and ensuring the safety of its EEZ.
