The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) confirmed that the death toll from the powerful earthquake that struck Cebu has risen to 79, as rescue and retrieval operations continue across affected areas.
According to NDRRMC reports, several towns remain without electricity and clean water as authorities rush to restore essential services. Over a hundred people have been injured, and dozens are still missing after the quake caused buildings to collapse and triggered landslides in nearby communities.
Local officials and volunteers are working round the clock to distribute relief goods and provide temporary shelters to displaced families. The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is also assessing infrastructure damage, including bridges and major roads, to ensure safety before reopening them to the public.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has ordered government agencies to fast-track assistance and support for victims, emphasizing the need for coordinated relief and recovery efforts.
As aftershocks continue to be felt, authorities remind residents to stay vigilant and follow official advisories for their safety.
