The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) is stepping up efforts to ensure that Filipino children receive proper nutrition during the critical first 1,000 days of life — from conception until the child’s second birthday.

DILG Secretary Benhur Abalos emphasized that this period is vital for a child’s brain development and long-term health. He urged local government units (LGUs) to strengthen programs that support mothers and infants, including prenatal care, breastfeeding promotion, and access to nutritious food.

“Proper nutrition in the first 1,000 days can prevent stunting and other developmental issues that affect a child’s future,” Abalos said, adding that well-nourished children are more likely to grow into healthy and productive adults.

The DILG is coordinating with other government agencies to enhance awareness campaigns and integrate nutrition-focused policies into local health programs. LGUs are also being encouraged to allocate resources for maternal and child health initiatives under their respective nutrition action plans.
