Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has openly criticized current President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. for his perceived pro-American stance, particularly in light of recent geopolitical tensions involving China. Duterte’s comments came after President Marcos expressed his concerns about a “gentleman’s agreement” Duterte had with Chinese leader Xi Jinping regarding the Ayungin Shoal, a disputed territory in the South China Sea.

During a late-night press conference in Davao City, Duterte labeled Marcos a “crybaby” for his repeated alignment with the United States, especially criticizing his recent trip to Washington DC for a trilateral meeting with US President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. Duterte defended his administration’s actions regarding China, asserting that he had maintained a status quo that avoided escalation without compromising Philippine sovereignty.

The former president also challenged Marcos to investigate the details of the agreement through his National Security Adviser Eduardo Año, who served as the Department of the Interior and Local Government head during Duterte’s term. Año has stated that no formal document exists confirming the supposed agreement related to the BRP Sierra Madre in the Ayungin Shoal.

Moreover, Duterte hinted at potential political rivalry with Marcos following the preventive suspension of Davao del Norte Governor Edwin Jubahib, suggesting that this action could be the start of political antagonism between them.

As Duterte’s remarks stir further discussion, the situation underscores the complex dynamics of Philippine foreign policy and internal politics amidst broader regional security concerns.
