MANILA — Juanito Victor “Jonvic” Remulla officially assumed his role as the Secretary of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) in a turnover ceremony on Wednesday, succeeding Benhur Abalos. Abalos vacated the position after filing his candidacy for the 2025 senatorial elections.
Remulla stated that President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. tasked him with implementing structural reforms in the DILG and enhancing the responsiveness of local governments. One of his first actions will be the shutdown of all Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs) in the country, including a POGO hub at Island Cove Resort, a property once owned by his family. Remulla said he is coordinating directly with POGO operators to ensure closures by December 15.
The new DILG chief also aims to reform the Philippine National Police (PNP), promising to eliminate the “palakasan” or patronage system and establish a merit-based structure for promotions. He expressed concerns about the PNP’s “top-heavy” hierarchy, suggesting the need to streamline its structure.
Remulla joins his brother, Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla, as a member of President Marcos’ cabinet. He emphasized their close relationship and complementary expertise, with Jonvic focusing on local government and Jesus Crispin on legal affairs, both aiming to drive meaningful changes within their respective areas.
