State volcanologists have reported lahar flows in several towns in Albay province as Tropical Storm Kristine (international name: Trami) continues to impact the region.
PHIVOLCS Director Teresito Bacolcol confirmed lahar activity in Barangay Masarawag, Guinobatan, and Barangay Binitayan, Daraga. “So far, based on the information we received, there were lahar occurrences in these areas,” Bacolcol stated during an interview on PTV’s Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon on Wednesday.
Additionally, a streamflow seismometer detected lahar signals in Barangay Anoling, Camalig, on Tuesday, indicating increased volcanic debris flow in the area.
PHIVOLCS had previously warned communities near Mayon Volcano, especially in its southern areas, to prepare for potential lahar flows, muddy streamflows, or runoff in rivers and drainage systems due to the heavy rains brought by Tropical Storm Kristine. The areas most at risk include Camalig, Guinobatan, Daraga, Legazpi, and Santo Domingo.
Alongside lahar activity, PHIVOLCS recorded eight rockfall events and two volcanic earthquakes from 12 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, events likely intensified by the ongoing storm.
