On the first day of the 47th ASEAN Summit and related gatherings in Kuala Lumpur, Ferdinand Marcos Jr. held a busy schedule of bilateral meetings with key world leaders.
Among his talks:
- With Hun Manet of Cambodia, Marcos reaffirmed the Philippines’ commitment to a peaceful resolution of Thailand–Cambodia border issues through dialogue and international-law frameworks.
- With Anutin Charnvirakul of Thailand, he offered condolences over the passing of Queen Sirikit and discussed boosting tourism, trade and investment links.
- With Mark Joseph Carney (Canada’s Prime Minister), their conversation centred on strengthening energy cooperation, trade, and upholding a rules-based international order.
- With Japan’s new Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae and with the European Council (represented by António Costa), Marcos discussed diplomatic ties, trade engagement and preparations ahead of the Philippines’ ASEAN Chairmanship in 2026.
In addition to these talks, Marcos emphasized that when the Philippines hosts ASEAN in 2026, the focus will be on practical, inclusive and measurable initiatives.
